The Big 3-0...

I turned 30 on March 8, and I'll be honest, it wasn't quite the birthday I had planned.  But, it was absolutely fabulous and I am so grateful for the day I had.  Most of you know that I celebrate birthday week.  Well, my birthday week just happened to fall on moving week/last days in Hereford for me and Lyla week.  I had planned on being at a speech convention in San Antonio, celebrating with some of my dearest girlfriends from grad school, but with the move that wasn't possible.  Little did I know that my two favorite classes, the PPCD class I worked closely with and a 3-year old Headstart class I adopted as my own (largely due to the fact that I had to go through that class to get to my office and the fabulous two teachers) threw me a surprise party!  It was so unexpected, I had so much fun celebrating with the kids, and I felt very loved and appreciated. :-)

My birthday crown,
which I wore until it made my head hurt.
(I have a large head.)

A happy 30th cupcake!

Me with my pretty cupcake.  It was too cute to eat!
(The room is dark because it was nap time in the classroom.)

Some of my little friends gave me my favorite present.  They had worked all week on a poster with all their thumbprints and names.  Absolutely perfect gift - I got a little teary. :-)

Lyla and Matt made a surprise appearance at the party.  Lyla bawled until I gave her my ice cream.  Girlfriend is smart...she knows how to get what she wants.
(And for the record, she promptly began bawling again when Daddy took it away.)

Birthday celebrations continued after we got back to Lubbock with multiple calls from friends, a girls night out, yummy food...and a sense of being home.  Thirty didn't start out how I thought it would, but it's been pretty great so far!

Day 5: The Realities...

July 20, 2014 Afternoon:  Well, we moved down the hall to a different ICU room.  Our new nurse is like a drill sergeant grandma…sweet but serious. Warning: This is about to get real.  If you are offended by foul language, you might skip this post.  If you don't like the ugly truth, you might skip this post. So, here's the deal.  I've been thinking a lot today about reality.  Living in the moment.  Not worrying about tomorrow and next week and next month.  But that's hard for me.  I'm a planner and I have to plan ahead some because I'm here and the girls are being shuffled around and everyone is being so incredibly kind and offering help.  It all overwhelms me and I get to a place of feeling like "Screw this, I can't do it.  This is shitty.  There's just no other way to say it."  And then I get a text or a call or a hug that brings me back to a different reality; one in which hundreds of people are rooting us on in th...

Oh Christmas Tree, Oh Christmas Tree...

Friday Night Lights - A Poem...

The Friday night lights were back in full swing. Lyla arrived at the game asleep in her sling. All was well, the lights were bright. Little did we know that the end was in sight. The speaker came on and proclaimed domination. And that, dear friends, led to overstimulation. So we packed up our baby and checked on the time. The game started at seven-thirty, We left at seven-thirty-nine. The end.
